Summer Archives Engagement Lead

As supervisory assistant to the Archives Manager, the Summer Archives Engagement Lead will play a crucial role in overseeing the site’s core summer operations and ensuring the exceptional experience of visitors. Through taking on a senior role in leading interpretive tours of the historic Gaol and Courthouse, they will engage diverse members of the public with intriguing accounts of the area’s history, drawing from Archives resources to enhance the details, accuracy, and interest of their material. Alongside the Archives Manager, they will bring their enthusiasm and skill to the training of additional tour guides. By assisting visiting researchers with enquiries into historical people, places, and events, they will strengthen their own skills in archival research and gain exposure to a multitude of experiences of the past. They will be encouraged to bring their particular interests and strengths to the Archives’ activities of outreach. Mentored by an experienced archivist, they will gain exposure to the range of tasks and directions in the field of cultural heritage.

 

The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in history and heritage, with expressed enthusiasm for the places, materials, and stories of the past. They will be pursing a post-secondary degree in a related field, such as Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Museum Studies, Communications, or Tourism.

 

Strong applicants will have experience with verbal presentation, such as research presentation, debate, theatre, or teaching. They will also have some experience conducting and presenting their own research. Their ability to work independently and exercise good judgement will be well-developed, ideally demonstrated by pat experience with supervision and/or leadership. They will also demonstrate abilities in respectful interaction with diverse members of the public. They will be comfortable in the use of basic digital tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, database navigation, and social media. Any experience working or volunteering with heritage sites, museums, and/or libraries is a major benefit. Any level of fluency in French would also be a significant positive.

The position will be on-site at the Charlotte County Archives in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, for a 20-week term with an anticipated start date of May 21, 2024. Hours will typically be between 9 – 5, including weekends, for a total of 35 hours weekly. The wage is $17/hour.

 

Due to grant funding, applicants must be eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs program. Requirements are age between 15 and 30 at the start of employment, and Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or refugee status. We regret that we are unable to consider applications for this position from applicants who do not meet these criteria.

Archival Assistant (paid internship)

24-week contract, starting September 9, 2024

Young Canada Works Building Careers in Heritage

 

We are seeking an enthusiastic intern to assist in furthering our work of preserving, recording, and providing access to our documentary heritage, with a particularly focus on the too-often overlooked records of women’s history. Working closely with an experienced professional archivist, the Archives Intern will build skills in the archival processing of materials of all kinds. They will receive training to work through processes of appraisal, arrangement, and description. They will research and write descriptive finding aids to enhance awareness of these holdings within the Archives and in the public eye, along with evocative posts for Archives’ social media and other communication channels. As a key team member in a small institution, they will be granted both significant responsibility and significant support.

 

This position is ideal for a university graduate of Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences, particularly with a concentration in History, Information, or a related field, seeking to build a career in cultural heritage or history (public or academic). Some experience conducting history-related research is required, whether in an educational, professional, or independent context. Coursework and/or user experience involving archives is a significant asset, though specific archival training will be provided.

 

A strong candidate will possess robust skills in research, writing, and critical thinking. They will have a demonstrated ability to work independently with good judgement and possess solid organizational skills. They will be comfortable in the use of basic digital tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, database search, and social media.

Key requirements are graduation from university or college; Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or refugee status; commitment to work the full duration of employment, without another consecutive full-time job; and age between 16 – 30 at the start of employment.
